[Kutchan] On the 18th, the final day of Hokkaido’s largest cycling competition “Niseko Classic” (sponsored by Hokkaido Events), the main event road race was held in Kutchan, Kyowa, Rankoshi and Niseko. About 970 amateur athletes from Japan and overseas ran through the foot of Mt. Yotei with cheers from the roadside.
This event is officially recognized by the International Cycling Union (Switzerland) and will be held as a qualifying round for the World Championships to be held in Glasgow, England in August. Last year, most of the foreign players were residents of Japan due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, but the number of participants from overseas increased this year, and the total number of players has doubled compared to last year.
The race was divided into two divisions, 150km and 85km, by distance, and competed by gender and age. The 150km course starts and ends at Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu Ski Resort in Kutchan Town, and is a mountain course with slopes and curves. At 6:15 a.m., the athletes started in unison and pedaled hard to reach the finish line.
