In Chitose, office building developments are increasing rapidly, alongside the establishment of domestic and international semiconductor companies supporting the operation of Lapidus’ factory. By the end of last year, 37 companies had opened offices in the city, utilizing existing commercial buildings and repurposing former stores to accommodate the surge in demand. The city is quietly transforming as it prepares for new construction projects.

ASML, a leading semiconductor equipment manufacturer, has installed extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment in Lapidus’ factory, marking Japan’s first implementation of this next-generation technology. With 60 technicians supporting the manufacturing line setup, the city continues to attract more high-tech companies.

Chitose Station Plaza, located near the JR Chitose Station, houses offices for several semiconductor equipment giants like ASML, Tokyo Electron, and SCREEN Holdings, making the building a semiconductor hub. The demand for office spaces has increased, and 37 companies have already established a presence, with 57 more considering moving in.

As existing offices become fully occupied, including large buildings like Chitose Arcadia Plaza, there is increasing pressure for additional space, prompting new real estate agents to step in. Development is also spreading to areas outside the city center, where former commercial properties are being repurposed for high-tech operations.

Despite this rapid growth, Chitose faces challenges in providing enough housing and facilities for the influx of workers. There is a growing need for improved infrastructure and services to support the workforce, including the creation of a liveable environment for international talent, which will be key to sustaining the city’s semiconductor industry growth.
