The trial will operate two round-trip helicopter flights in three areas: between New Chitose and Sapporo Okadama Airports to Niseko, Obihiro Airport to Furano, and Kushiro Airport to the Mashu Lake area.
While the drive from New Chitose to Niseko takes about two hours, the helicopter ride will take approximately 30 minutes. The trial will use helicopters seating nine passengers, with landing sites outside of airports located on nearby farms. Representatives from the participating organizations will be among the passengers, and there are plans to invite the public to join in the future.
While helicopter transport for tourism purposes is not uncommon at airports like Narita or Chubu Centrair, it has yet to become established in Hokkaido. Attracting high-spending affluent travelers remains a key challenge for Hokkaido’s tourism industry. Despite the high costs, HAP and its partners recognize the potential of helicopters for quick access to remote tourist areas.
