Hokkaido Airport (HAP, Chitose), along with the cities of Chitose, Sapporo, Obihiro, Kushiro, and others, will conduct their first trial of helicopter passenger transport in late November, connecting four airports in Hokkaido with major tourist destinations. The goal is to significantly reduce travel time from the airports, creating new tourism routes targeting affluent domestic and international visitors. The trial aims to identify operational challenges and pave the way for future commercialization.

The initiative will be led by the “Hokkaido Airport Secondary Transport Advancement Committee,” formed in August by HAP, four cities in Hokkaido, the Hokkaido Bureau of Economy, Trade, and Industry, and the Hokkaido Economic Federation. The trial will operate two round-trip helicopter flights in three areas: between New Chitose and Sapporo Okadama Airports to Niseko, Obihiro Airport to Furano, and Kushiro Airport to the Mashu Lake area.

While the drive from New Chitose to Niseko takes about two hours, the helicopter ride will take approximately 30 minutes. The trial will use helicopters seating nine passengers, with landing sites outside of airports located on nearby farms. Representatives from the participating organizations will be among the passengers, and there are plans to invite the public to join in the future.

While helicopter transport for tourism purposes is not uncommon at airports like Narita or Chubu Centrair, it has yet to become established in Hokkaido. Attracting high-spending affluent travelers remains a key challenge for Hokkaido’s tourism industry. Despite the high costs, HAP and its partners recognize the potential of helicopters for quick access to remote tourist areas.

In the future, there are plans to replace helicopters with environmentally friendly autonomous “flying cars.”

### Is a Two-Hour Drive from the Airport Long or Short? It Depends on the Person.

For affluent travelers eager to experience Hokkaido’s famous powder snow, the demand for quick access via helicopter is expected to be high. Planned helicopter routes include major destinations like Niseko, Furano, and Tomamu. Additionally, a heliport is being planned in Makari, a town neighboring Niseko, which is generating excitement for improved access to the resort.

## Helicopter Tourism in Hokkaido

Helicopter tours in Hokkaido offer a unique way to enjoy the region’s stunning landscapes and seasonal beauty. The breathtaking views from the sky provide an entirely different perspective than from the ground. Here’s an overview of popular helicopter tourism options in Hokkaido.

### 1. Popular Tourist Spots

– **Furano & Biei Area**
You can enjoy aerial views of vast lavender fields and the patchwork-like hills. In summer, the landscape is covered in purple lavender, while autumn offers a golden view of the harvest.

– **Lake Toya**
Known as a volcanic lake, Lake Toya features Nakajima Island in the center and scenic mountains surrounding it. From the air, you can fully appreciate the grandeur of the caldera formation.

– **Shiretoko Peninsula**
A UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, Shiretoko Peninsula offers untouched nature. Helicopters provide access to otherwise unreachable spots, with opportunities to spot whales and dolphins as well.

– **Sapporo City Night View**
Sapporo’s night view is one of Japan’s top three. A nighttime helicopter cruise lets you enjoy the glittering cityscape from above.

### 2. Features of Helicopter Tourism

– **Breathtaking Panoramic Views**
From the sky, you can take in sweeping vistas of Hokkaido’s vast natural beauty. The scenery changes with the seasons, offering a new experience each time.

– **Perfect for Special Occasions**
Helicopter tours are popular for celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, proposals, and other significant events. Private tours are often available, with customized plans to make the experience even more special.

### 3. How to Use and Things to Keep in Mind

– **Pricing**
The cost varies by course and duration, typically starting from tens of thousands of yen for standard tours. Private tours and special plans may be more expensive (inquiries with operators are necessary).

– **Reservations**
Helicopter tours require advance reservations. Since spots can fill up quickly, especially in peak seasons, it’s best to book early once your plans are set.

– **Weather Conditions**
Helicopters are highly weather-dependent, and tours may be canceled or rescheduled due to poor conditions. In winter, snowstorms or heavy snow may significantly impact flights, so it’s important to check the weather.

### Conclusion

Helicopter tourism in Hokkaido offers a luxurious and exclusive way to experience its vast natural beauty. For those seeking views that can only be seen from the air and wishing to enjoy Hokkaido’s seasonal landscapes, it’s an experience not to be missed.
